The tourism technology market is flooded with products that put “AI” in the tagline and “tourism” in the description. Most of them are general-purpose tools with destination marketing vocabulary layered on top. The difference between that and a system built for DMO operations is the difference between a brochure and an operations manual.

In the last eighteen months, every technology company selling to DMOs has added AI to their pitch deck. AI-powered analytics. AI-driven marketing. AI-enhanced visitor engagement. The language is everywhere, and it all sounds roughly the same.

This isn’t necessarily dishonest. Many of these products do use AI in some capacity. But there’s a meaningful difference between a tool that uses AI as a feature and a system that was engineered from the ground up around the operational patterns of destination marketing organizations.


The adapted vs. the purpose-built

Most “AI for tourism” products follow a familiar pattern. Start with a general-purpose AI capability: text generation, data visualization, chatbot interaction. Then customize the interface for tourism. Add destination marketing terminology. Build a few templates that reference DMO workflows. Market it to CVBs.

This approach can produce useful features. But it doesn’t produce operational intelligence. A general-purpose tool adapted for tourism doesn’t know that your partner equity tracking matters as much as your campaign metrics. It doesn’t understand that your board reporting cadence drives your data analysis priorities. It doesn’t grasp that a TID compliance report has different stakeholder requirements than an executive summary.

It knows tourism vocabulary. It doesn’t know DMO operations.

What purpose-built actually looks like

A system built for DMO operations starts with a different question. Not “how can AI help tourism?” but “what are the specific, recurring, predictable operational functions that every DMO performs, and how can a system handle them at the level of quality that boards, funders, and stakeholders expect?”

That question leads to a very different architecture. One that maps to departments, not features. One that understands the relationship between a grant compliance deadline and a financial reporting cycle. One that knows a partner performance report serves a different audience than a campaign attribution analysis, even when they draw from overlapping data.

When evaluating AI solutions, the questions that matter aren’t about AI itself. They’re about operational understanding.

Does the system know the difference between a TID assessment report and a general financial summary? Can it produce a board packet that matches your specific format? Does it understand that partner communications need equitable rotation tracking? Can it cross-reference your CRM data with your STR reports without manual export?

If the answer is “you’d need to train it to do that,” it’s a general-purpose tool. If the answer is “it was built to do that,” it’s something else entirely.

The questions to ask

Next time a vendor puts “AI” in their pitch, ask how many DMOs were involved in building it. Ask what operational functions it covers beyond marketing content generation. Ask whether it connects to Simpleview or Tempest natively. Ask how it handles TID reporting. Ask about grant compliance tracking.

The answers will tell you whether you’re looking at a tourism-flavored AI tool or a management system built for the way your organization actually runs.

The terminology is less important than the architecture. And the architecture should start with your operations.
